Charleston property management committed to creating personalized and pleasant experiences for residents and property owners alike so that everyone can be happy renting long-term.
Charleston Home Rentals is a Charleston property management company committed to creating personalized and pleasant experiences for residents and property owners alike so that everyone can be happy renting long-term.
Charleston Home Rentals is a property management company committed to creating personalized and pleasant experiences for residents and property owners alike so that everyone can be happy renting long-term.
We know that all parties in a rental agreement can and should be happy renting, and our goal is to foster harmonious landlord-resident relationships in which everyone’s needs are met. We make the rental process better for you and your tenants.
Charleston Home Rentals has been in business for 16 years, and CHR partners have close to 40 years of industry experience. In that time, we’ve learned to focus on the most important aspects of property management service, starting with improved communication.
In addition to phone and email support, we have both online resident and property owner portals. We even provide a handbook to tenants and owners to answer their common questions, proactively addressing various topics before they become an issue.
With our proven processes, we help renters confidently choose the right home and give owners a realistic evaluation of a property’s rental value. This means we help a motivated tenant quickly rent the owner’s home so everyone benefits.
It is very important to the CHR team that you find the home that is right for your unique circumstances. We have extensive knowledge of neighborhoods throughout the Tri-County area, its local schools and recreational areas, etc.
We frequently feature some of our favorite local businesses and destinations on social media, so be sure to connect with us on Facebook and Instagram.
In Charleston’s competitive rental market, both renters and property owners can demand more of the property management companies that serve them. Residents want to get a fair price for a nice rental with prompt response to maintenance issues. Owners want to get their homes rented quickly, get paid on time and avoid vacancies.
Is it possible for a Charleston property management company to check all these boxes? The Charleston Home Rentals property management team believes that the answer can and should be YES. Our team has been on a mission to deliver on this since 2006.
Charleston Home Rentals is here to help you succeed as a landlord or rental property investor. This is why we offer full service property management in Charleston and in the rest of the South Carolina Tri-County area. You may hear that most property management companies in Charleston advertise their services as “full service”. So how is Charleston Home Rentals different?
It lies in our philosophy that all parties in a rental agreement should Be Happy Renting. This means that we care about our residents as much as we care about our owners. When tenants are happy, they take care of the property and stay longer — leading to better returns and less costs for our owner clients.
You’ll get your time back and enjoy the return on investment without any of the headaches or the liability. Choosing to go with professional property management in Charleston rather than self managing is the first step to getting more out of your rental home. Here’s what the process will look like for you when you decide to work with the CHR Property Management Team.
Once the best rental value has been determined, our goal is to help owners generate rental income as soon as possible. We oversee leasing and leverage technology to make it easy for renters to schedule a showing of a property and apply online.
Once your property is leased, the CHR team is equipped to communicate with both the owner and resident in a variety of convenient ways and respond in a timely fashion. Our sophisticated phone system enables callers to quickly connect with the right person, avoiding being routed through a frustrating automated process.
In addition to phone and email support, residents and property owners can make requests through our online portals, easily accessible from our website. The resident portal offers the ability to pay rent online, schedule an auto-draft, submit a work order and view important documents, such as a lease.
Should an issue happen, CHR Partner Josh Azar is responsible for repairs and maintenance. Our team knows that a quick response is critical to keep the residents happy and to protect the owner’s property. In addition to online maintenance requests, we offer a 24/7 call center. Assistance is easy to request and always available.
CHR has been in business since 2006, and the partners have more than 40 years of experience in the property management industry. Even so, we are continually looking for ways to improve the renting experience for our owners and residents alike. For example, an industry standard is to have one staff member manage 60 homes. We have capped this at 40 homes to deliver the high level of customer service that our owners and their residents deserve.
As you are considering local Charleston property management companies, be aware that you ultimately get what you pay for. Experience has shown that our team’s overall approach results in happy residents, long-term occupancy and limited vacancies.
Our philosophy is that all parties in a rental agreement should Be Happy Renting. We are confident in our ability to find a qualified resident for your property. Simply contact us today for a free, no-obligation rental analysis.

Charleston Home Rentals, LLC: Reviews
Fantastic experience: I have been using Charleston Home Rentals since 2021 and have had nothing but a great experience with them. All tenants have been fantastic and well vetted. I can not be happier with Josh, who is my POC with them. Would recommend them to anyone who is either a tenant or someone who is renting their property.
Fantastic experience: I have been using them for the last 6 years as an owner of rental properties. Highly recommend. They are fast, provide excellent service, give me all the documents I need for my accountant, and really care about my tenants. Highly recommend. They are always available to both me and my tenants. Couldn't ask for a better company
Fantastic experience: Employees are very responsive to requests from me and my tenant. I never have to worry about anything.
Negative experience: Extended my tenant’s lease without asking me first. Had to beg repeatedly for inspections of the property. The tenant left the house trashed and the property manager returned the deposit to the tenant after I instructed them not to. Used this company for two years and things just got worse over time. When I sent emails or left voicemails, it would take days (usually a week) for any reply. Usually no reply until I contacted them again. Would not recommend at all.
Fantastic experience: Overall very professional in our home maintenance and with monetary payments. I recommend the company since their employees with us have been very nice, especially now that we reside in Germany for a while now.
Fantastic experience: I have been with Charleston Home Rentals for more than a year now and have had the best experience of any property management company ever. They bring the most qualified tenants and conduct business in a timely manner every month. I never have to worry what condition my property is in, because repairs and maintenance are performed as needed the first time. The tenants remain satisfied and continue to renew. I can not say enough positive statements about this company.
Positive experience: Started out with CHR in Jan 2020, and it seemed like a doable company, the move in was easy and didn't require anyone being present. Application and other paperwork was easy. Maintenance requests were actually answered much of the time. Only hiccup and first red flag was the homeowner reaching out (to my husband directly) to have someone appraise the property for a refi (this happened after only living in the property for 2 weeks!). CHR could've prevented this as this is not the correct procedure of the homeowner reaching out to tenants. It's the duty of the property management team instead. With this, came poor communication between CHR and the home owner. I dont think CHR managed the property very well. It wasnt clean and there were damages small in nature in the home prior to moving in. Again, they didnt do a walk thru prior to moving in, which made the move in experience super easy, but at a cost! Second red flag was communication could've been better. Towards the end of being with CHR, it became harder to reach anyone via email or phone. Finally, our contract was transferred to True Blue rentals on April 2021. Apparently, this is a family owned business who decided to start another company (True Blue) between brothers, Matt Azar and Josh Azar. This review will be continued with my review of True Blue.
Fantastic experience: I have been very happy with the home that I found and the communication both during lease process and move-in. I even had one small maintenance issue that was fixed immediately . I did not enjoy all of the fees- admin etc, but who does! Would recommend
Negative experience: Worst experience ever! I would definitely would not recommend to anybody. If I could give 0 stars I would.
Fantastic experience: We've been working with Charleston Home Rentals for a few years now. They have been very approachable and easy to work with. We look forward to a longer relationship with them.
Negative experience: I got caught with y Pants down with these people. I had recently lost my house to foreclosure and took what I could get. Believe me this is the bottom of the barrel. The list is too long to explain. To make it clear, if you can avoid these people, please do. I would not be surprised if there's a tape out there between my wife and I. These are by far bottom feeders. I give one star because you have to give something in order to post it. If you love your family keep away.
Negative experience: As a property owner, let me save yourself money, headaches and time from this company. One of the most unorganized companies I ever dealt with. You will end up coaching their front staff as they do not put in any effort to train them themselves. The owner talks big game to get you in the door, but after that, you are on your own. If you ever manage to get someone to reply to your emails or get a call back (because they don't ever pick up their phones during their regular business hours) you will get wrong information. I can't count the amount of times I had to correct the front operation about their mistakes (often they would send ME the owner, information that pertained to my tenants instead of emailing them). After filling out their paperwork, they lost it not two weeks later and were also asking for the keys of my rental property when I had already given it to them. I learned more about this business model from their lack of knowledge and the chaos that ensued at ANY request that was needed from them. The most basic expectations from a rental property management could not even be met. A true dumpster fire. Stay away from them.
Negative experience: Have been using this company to rent my house out for about a year now. Not only do they not communicate with you, it seems like they don't even care. Every time I have tried to talk to them, I get an automated response and they might get back to me in a week. If I could rate them worse, I would. Am currently looking for another company to take care of my property. (Edit) Not only does this company not do what they are paid to do, but the second that they actually have to do something, they "Disengage services". Not only did they do this, but they also did not adhere to the contract that they signed, and stopped responding to any communication attempts. No matter if you are a renter or landlord, do not trust this company.
Negative experience: Truly terrible management and terrible experience. Applied for a property at the start of the week. $150 in total. Called, emailed and left an embarrassing amount of emails. Ready so sign sight unseen. I even showed up to the office and nobody was there. By Wednesday I was finally reached out to and he didn’t even know it was for rent, he even talked poorly about his own agents. Saying they’re really “hit or miss” They took our application fees and our ss numbers. With 0 communication on whether or not it was already rented. To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. But ultimately if that’s how they treat possible tenants I can’t imagine how they treat current tenants.
Positive experience: Similar to someone who posted below, I'm here because it's not ethical to be offered a gift card for a 5-star review. So I suspect some of the 5-star reviews were because of a gift card offer but who really knows. You can offer me a gift card for ANY review, but you can't specify what I write. Currently a renter. Why not 5 stars? Dock 1 star for the state of the rental when I moved in. It was not cleaned well at all - the window sills were covered with dirt/dust, the shower had/has black mold in it (which keeps coming back no matter what I do and I used to live in a much older building in Charleston prior to moving here), the fridge wasn't cleaned, and the windows were incredibly dirty. Dock 1 star between the gift card issue and when I wasn't notified that landscaping people would be spending several hours cleaning up the outside of the building. I was working from home and had to leave because it was incredibly loud - it's pretty frustrating to have to leave your own home and it's not that hard to send an FYI email. Also would have been good customer service to have responded to my email with a brief apology, but that didn't occur either. Good things: The property itself is nice and the women who showed me it were on-time, friendly, and answered my questions. When I have submitted maintenance requests, they have been taken care of quickly with the exception of the mold that's still on the ceiling above my stairs... and it's still there. The online portal is easy to use.
Fantastic experience: CHR manage a rental property for me. I intended it to be a passive investment, and that is what CHR make it. They are super responsive to any questions (I had a few when first renting the property) and once tenants were in place it has been a breeze. Good reporting and payment of funds collected monthly on day 9 or 10th of each month. Would highly recommend.
Positive experience: I'm a renter. Reasons for 4 star: When I needed service done, they were very quick to act. Why not 5 star: My move in day, my lease had said I would receive the lock box code at 8am. I stood outside for 3 hours calling and emailing until I got the code, luckily the moving company was late or else that would have costed me money. Edited: changed to 3 stars cause they offered me an Amazon gift card for a 5-star review
Fantastic experience: I am very pleased with the rental service provided by the Charleston Home Rentals over the past 10+ years. They are very professional in dealing with various rental issues.
Negative experience: I should have known when it took 3 tries just to get in to view the apartment, and was given incorrect lock box codes four times, that this is not a professional or well run property management company. If you try to call their office it is 100% impossible to speak to a real human. The voice message states they will return your call "as soon as someone is available"...in 5 months I never was able to get anyone on the phone. Only communication was through email, and would take several days to weeks to get a reply. Furthermore, after a month of living in the apartment all the cheap fixes and band aid repairs became apparent, and despite several complaints and maintenance requests, these were never fixed. Holes in floor, gaps in the door frame and pest complaints were all ignored. The floor was literally falling in. The worst leasing experience I have ever had. When I let them know I wanted to buy out of my lease (literally worth the money to not have to deal with this “business” any longer), MAGICALLY they were very responsive and began calling me 5+ times a day, as they had lost THEIR copy of the key to the unit. Truly unbelievable professionalism. Will be filing a formal complaint if any further issues.
Fantastic experience: Delivers on Every Promise. Outstanding experience. It should be noted that we live out of town and were able to sell our house after 5 years of renters and property management with only a visit from a maid service. That should tell you everything you need to know about this company. I never had to get on a plane to "fix the place up." I just ordered a good deep clean and our house sold in 1 day with no issues. Also they made some really intelligent business choices with lease terms, lengths, etc. They had our house under lease for the entire period of 5 years. I think we may have had to make two mortgage payments that entire time as people moved out and new renters moved in. We had a preset maintenance limit with them and they would just fix the minor issues and we would get a report. Totally stress free way to own a property and live far away.
Fantastic experience: I submitted two work order requests for repairs to our rental home. From start to finish, everything about the process was easy and quick! I was contacted within 48 hours for both issues, and the problems were resolved!
Negative experience: Such an awful company. Run, don’t walk away. Tried to change lease to add hundreds of dollars of fees/year. Had to contact homeowner to get around this predatory group. Don’t know how they’re still in business.
Negative experience: Does not respond to emails or phone calls. Will add on lots of hidden fees and will not let you know what they are for or will not provide you with what they should be for. Very shady company. Held security deposit check for weeks.
Positive experience: Communication was hilariously bad when I was trying to get in touch before move in. I had to drop in to their office just to be able to talk to someone. Thankfully didn’t have to really deal with them to much after that. The actual property was great and I had a good experience with maintenance (who fixed our AC and brought a window unit while we waited on that), but everything always felt a little sketchy. Beware of extra charges. For a while they started adding on a $10 charge on our rent for some sort of identity theft protection but thankfully they did away with that. When I moved out I had to pay a $200 administration fee out of my security deposit. The cleaning only cost $150. Oh and they bribed me with a $25 gift card to give a 5-star review just now which is why I’m writing this at all.
Negative experience: Very negative experience. They don’t maintain the property as they should therefore things break because they are not kept up
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals is a great rental company who has always been responsive to our needs. The portal is nice and easy and it makes communication and requests very convenient. If you're moving to Charleston or are looking for a good property manager I'd recommend Charleston Home Rentals.
Fantastic experience: This experience has been exhilarating to say the least. In the beginning, our realtor was very communicative, but once she got our money it was nearly impossible to reach her or have her get back to us. She arrived at the showing glistening, therefore, that is what I expected from this experience, including the state of the house we moved into. Well well well, to our surprise, Ms. Realtor had gotten one over on us. Thankfully, the owner of the company really came thru for us and I am extremely grateful! Since I left 5 stars when and how will I be receiving that $25 Starbucks gift card?
Fantastic experience: I have been renting from Charleston Home Rentals for over 2 and a half years. They have always been very responsive to service calls. It has been a pleasure to rent from them.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals has allowed for a sooth transition to my new home in a new city. After sending maintenance requests for a few issues, someone was out the next day to fix all of it for us!
Negative experience: Would never rent a home from them again, $100's of hidden fees. Not responsive to phone calls, voice mails, emails, if you get somebody on the phone they always tells you to contact somebody else. Worst home rental company I have ever dealt with. So glad to be moved out.
Negative experience: I think it’s sad and should be unlawful that you provide access to your most precious information i.e bank accounts and SS. Pay the $75 application fee and can’t even get a text or email telling you someone else has already been approved, but yet the listing is still showing available.
Negative experience: This is one of the most unprofessional company I had to deal with. Do not reply to calls, voicemails, and emails. You basically have to chase behind them. I think that it isn't professional at all. I wouldn't recommend or deal with this company again.
Negative experience: I go to see 2 different houses. The first house had the wrong key in the lock box. The second house, I was given the wrong code for the lock box. I have called multiple times during the day, all I get is a answering service. This company does not return phone calls or emails. If I have these problems in trying to view the houses, I wonder how it will be for maintenance problems.
Negative experience: Very unprofessional for you to place a for rent sign on my yard without my permission. I never contacted you for your services. If you needed a fake client publicity, you should have at least contacted me first.
Fantastic experience: My husband, John Schmidt, and I are extremely pleased with Charleston Home Rentals service. They promptly informed us of any problems or concerns and followed up with us on the resolution. We really appreciate them staying on top of things.
Fantastic experience: Awesome team at Charleston Home Rentals! Made the entire process extremely easy and they charge less than all competitors in the state! Rented my house out in less than a week! Thanks everyone! Looking forward to a very profitable future!
Fantastic experience: Very attentive and professional. They make Move-in a breeze, and the resident portal for payments, questions, and maintenance is efficient and a great resource.
Negative experience: The only thing I got from this rental place was email from them saying in owe them money and I never used the service. Once I found out they hadn't listed or rented the property I pulled out and got nasty emails about owing them money.
Negative experience: Charleston Home Rentals was a terrible property management company to work with. We had terrible customer service once the contract was signed. Accounting made several errors in our first few months of having a renter. We were very relieved when we sold the house and parted ways with the company. Hopefully, they work to be humble enough to see where they need improvements and work to make those quickly.
Negative experience: Truly an awful, terribly owned and managed company. They had us sign a lease without disclosing the house was for sale... and it was all down hill from there. I cannot express how little they care about you as a renter - save your money and sanity! also good luck EVER getting anyone on the phone lol cant wait for the owners snarky insecure response to my google review! if you want a good laugh you should read some of them
Negative experience: Run as fast as you can from this company. I wouldn’t recommend renting from Charleston Home Rentals to my worst enemy. We moved into Fenwick Hall Allee and within the first two weeks or so, my bathroom sink started flooding the bathroom. It took a week for them to respond to the maintenance request and their fix? They ZIPTIED the pipes back together. Obviously the sink kept leaking. They take an exorbitant amount of time to respond to all maintenance requests. When we moved in, our carpets and bathroom were filthy, and obviously hadn’t been cleaned. One giant stain in the middle of the living room carpet was crusty and discolored and upon us moving out what did they do? Blamed that stain on us and kept our entire security deposit! One week before moving out, our lock on our front door just wouldn’t open. The lock wasn’t broken by us or damaged by us, it was like our keys just wouldn’t work. I’m a type 1 Diabetic and my blood sugar started dropping from the heat. I spent almost an hour trying to get someone from maintenance to help me. I explained that I needed to get into the apartment quickly to get juice for my blood sugar, as I couldn’t drive to the closest gas station with my sugar already low. The maintenance guy and the unhelpful girl who works for CHR both said “sorry can’t help you, better call a locksmith.” I was infuriated. They left it up to my roommate and I to pay the $280 lock replacement fee upfront from a local locksmith that came out almost two hours later. Luckily a neighbor was leaving for work and gave me a Coke for my blood sugar. We found mold in the air filter space while living in the apartment, which would explain why my roommate and I stayed sick all of the time after moving in. I contacted maintenance and their response? “Oh that’s not mold, that’s fine.” It was very obviously mold. Since moving out, they are now trying to pin a $3200 charge on us. Get this: those carpets that were on their last days? Looked like they had been through war? Had giant animal pee stains on them when we moved in? They took all those out and told us it was our fault and that we owed $3200. It gets better. They emailed and said “okay, we’ll keep the $900 deposit so now you only owe $2300. That $2300 is for the “new carpet” at the owner’s request, as well as a $200 admin fee for who knows what and a $500 cleaning fee.” Why the **** are you charging $500 for cleaning when you already kept our $900 deposit for a cleaning fee??? $200 admin fee??? For WHAT. Oh! And those “new carpets???” My roommate and I didn’t believe that they had honestly taken the carpets out, so we went by to see. There was a work crew there putting in hardwood floors. Hardwood floors, not carpet. So we’re expected to foot the bill for the owner deciding they wanted hardwood floors?! This company is a joke and we will not be paying the $2300 charge. I’d actually love a call from whoever manages this place and for them to take this insane charge off our credit, as it’s now been sent to collections. Stay FAR away from Charleston Home Rentals, friends.
Fantastic experience: I love Charleston Home Rental. I feel so comfortable knowing my property is handled professionally. When my tenants are happy renting, so I am I. I have recommended Charleston Home Rentals often.
Positive experience: This rental company used to be good when initially set up. Now it is getting worse and worse after more “staff” joined this company. They need to be well trained and acting more professional than only aiming owners’ money.
Negative experience: Charleston home rentals has managed my property for over 10 years. For the first few years everything went well and I felt as if my property was in good hands. My questions were answered in a timely manner, communication was good. Over the past couple of years however the customer service has really gone downhill. If an email is sent about an issue, unless it’s for any maintenance that needs to be done, it takes a few days for a response. I felt as if I was over charged for certain things. I needed to have something replaced in the unit and ended up getting a couple of different quotes. When I called CHR to go ahead and replace the unit they charged me AGAIN for an estimate even though I’d already received a quote from them. The communication is very poor. Most of the time I felt as if CHR worked more for the tenant than the owner. My last tenant failed to pay rent on time and there were no penalties even though the contract says a late fee is tagged on. This was even BEFORE the pandemic. I’ll be honest, I never switched property management companies because for the most part I received the rent on time and as long as I had a rent check I was good. On a positive note, if you have an issue you can call Josh Azar directly. He always picks up the phone to assist you with your needs and follow up on any concerns. The only problem I had with him recently is that I am planning on selling the property and my relationship with CHR is ending. He failed to communicate with my realtor about a change in the plan for the walkthrough after the tenant moved out. When I spoke to Josh about it he said he couldn’t even remember the realtors name or his information. This was unacceptable to me because since I’m in Virginia and my place is there in Charleston the realtor is acting on my behalf. This response showed me how unimportant my needs were to him. One more thing is that if you plan on using CHR, you won’t receive rent check until the middle of the month for some reason. Luckily I would pay my mortgage on the 15th of every month and I would receive rent a couple of days before that. So if your mortgage is due before the 15th then you’ll be screwed. Finally, maintenance issues. So expensive for labor, which is probably the norm. Something will cost $10 for the part but they’ll charge you an arm and a leg for labor. Just a few things to keep in mind with this company.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rental is amazing. Professional, responsive, and immediately on top of issues.
Negative experience: DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. Unless you want to be told lie after lie and given the run around with a MAJOR lack in communication and unprofessional people then its perfect for you. This is the worst company to rent from. There is a $20 a month extra charge that they do not tell you about in the lease but because it is "there program" you have to pay it. Even though in the leases there is no written word about a fee. We were told we were getting our back yard fence replaced like the listing said "large fenced in back yard" and when we keep asking about it, we are told "well if you don't like it you can move out". How is that professional and helping your tenets create a solution to the problem? IT DOESN"T. Don't rent from them, unless you want to be talked to like a child. POINT BLANK.
Negative experience: I will never recommend this company to anyone, not even my worst enemy. This is the worst company I ever had to deal with.
Negative experience: Charleston Home Rentals is the worst company I've ever rented from. There were THREE unauthorized entries into my apartment while I stayed there. That is a completely unacceptable practice. Good luck getting someone on the phone over there - they NEVER answer. Requests for repairs went unanswered. My carpet got soaked from an AC leak and I had to clean it up myself. Used my own fan and towels. This property management company is a JOKE. I will forever be telling anyone who will listen how awful they are.
Fantastic experience: I am posting once again because Charleston Home Rentals continues to provide superior service and assistance in a timely manner and professional manner.
Negative experience: DON'T RENT HERE unless you don't mind terrible communication and throwing your money away. As many of the other reviewers have stated, your security deposit basically belongs to them from the moment you pay it and you'll never get it back. And when you try to ask questions about why they took away random fees from your deposit they simply do not answer. Left the house spotless yet was still charged for unexplained cleaning and admin fees, and yet to hear back about these charges. Brittney Sweeney abandoned us from the moment we moved in, not responding to a single phone call or email, and the accounting department has not answered any of the times I have called them.
Fantastic experience: I’m so happy to come across Charleston Home Rentals. Not only do I love the house I recently moved into but the kindness and knowledge these realtors have is amazing. I was lucky to have Brittany Sweeney(who’s absolutely the sweetest). She was very patience with me as I came across some difficulties, but she still kept reaching out and helping me find ways to make me get the house I wanted. Want to thank you Brittany and Charleston home rentals for the amazing service and making it so easy for me.
Fantastic experience: Our garage door was broken. The repairs were completed within 48 hours!! Charleston Home Rentals, LLC are always responsive, respectful, and efficient. Thank you!!
Negative experience: Absolutely terrible management company... Pretty much paying an extra month's rent because they will steal your security deposit and try to bully you into not getting it back even when you leave the house spotless. They will lead you on and pretend that they will fix stuff, and then mark them as completed without fixing it. Our house had tons of termite damage and they did not tell us that our electric bill would be over $600 a month. Calling them thieves would be an understatement. Fraudulent company
Negative experience: Rental company added charges ($30 a month) mid-lease that they are refusing to remove. These charges are NOT in our leasing agreement and they did not receive our consent to add these charges. We are 8 months deep into a global pandemic and rather than offering some sort of rental relief to tenants, they are making up fees to get more money out of us during this difficult time. Worst of all is they are incredibly unresponsive. No one has ever picked up the phone when we called. Our voicemails are never returned. I have sent 8 emails over the last two weeks and still they refuse to remove the charges or even have someone contact me back. Save yourself the headache and find somewhere else to rent from.
Fantastic experience: Our air conditioning went out last month and I placed a maintenance request online and within minutes I received an email and a text and then a phone call letting me know that they contacted Charleston Heating and Air and that they would be calling me shortly (and to call them back if I didn't hear anything within an hour). About 10 minutes later I received a call from Charleston Heating and Air letting me know they would be out to take a look. It was evaluated that day and taken care of immediately. A follow up call from Charleston Home Rentals was made that same evening checking on the situation and confirming what needed to be done to get it fixed (it was more than just a simple unfreeze or recharge). A day later everything was taken care of !! Everyone was so wonderful !! Leanne & Nick
Negative experience: From the landlord perspective, I can tell you this management company is among the worst. They are disorganized, unmotivated, and uninformed. Since day one, it has been a struggle. Issues include unattended/ignored maintenance items, abnormally long vacancies, and a general lack of understanding when it comes to the goals of a long term, multi-unit investor. When a concern arises, usually every other week with these clowns, it's usually impossible to get ahold of the owners or management. Instead, you're handed off to the 20-something co-ed who has to be reminded who I am and what units I own. Tenants have reached out to me directly several times because CHR either did not adequately address their issues or did not answer back at all. As of today, I am terminating my agreement with CHR.
Fantastic experience: We have been living in the house now for 4 months and have had an amazing experience with Charleston Home Rentals, LLC. A few things started out needing replaced in the house and they made it very easy for me to be reimbursed for the part bought. They make it very easy to pay rent online email to remind you to pay rent. They communicate very well and appreciate their renters with random acts of kindness!
Fantastic experience: The repair order that was placed was responded to in a timely matter. The staff is very professional and friendly. Especially during trying times like this.
Fantastic experience: Everyone has been friendly and helpful. The rental process has been smooth and easy.
Fantastic experience: I have stayed with Charleston Home Rentals for a little over 3.5 years now and LOVE it. They make things so simple, from paying rent, to submitting work orders, to asking questions and concerns. Thank y’all so much for the fast service and making us feel at home!!! Our a/c unit went down yesterday and they got it handled within 24 hours!!! So helpful and fast! Thank you!!!!
Fantastic experience: Moving during a pandemic has proven difficult but Charleston Homes Rentals made the process so much easier. Thank you for the quick response and fixing of our AC unit. Couldn’t be happier.
Negative experience: Our A/C went out twice and both times it took over 4 days to send someone out. The house got up to 90 degrees but still no calls back or responses. Without a doubt the most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with in my life. I wouldn’t even suggest my worst enemy to work with such a despicable company like CHR. Should change their name to Charleston Hell Rentals.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals has been a great organization to work with. The response team is very quick and caring about any questions or needs we have had.
Negative experience: This company has a great website and relatively well spoken owners and staff. However, in my experience, they talk the talk, but do not walk the walk. After one year of surprises with Charleston Home Rentals, I was eager to find another management company that had a system and staff I felt that I could rely on. From beginning to end, my experience with Charleston Home Rentals was one that can be summarized by gross disorganization, inconsistency, and poor communication. Overall, I am sure they are nice people, but as far as providing property management services that give their clients peace of mind, assure a high level of integrity, and maintain a property management company that is able to perform consistently, unfortunately, I feel they have a substantial amount of growing to do.
Fantastic experience: 2nd time I needed them to fix something and it was done in less then a week. There service is very good and problem is fixed.
Fantastic experience: This has been a great experience. Charleston Home Rentals has been so amazing throughout this entire experience. With every question we asked (and there were a lot) they have explained everything to make us feel right at home including an amazing little gift bag on the day we moved is. I'm so happy that we found Charleston Home Rentals!
Fantastic experience: The service has been ridiculously fast on week days. Maybe we were just lucky but less than 24 hours before we had someone take a look and make repairs. Twice now!
Fantastic experience: I stayed for a year in a lovely home. I have no complants about the house or charleston home rentals. I would recommend them to anyone who needs a place.
Negative experience: Security deposit is more like a donation to the LLC. I left the place noticeably better than when I moved in, and they came back with a load of cleaning charges on me - (they didn’t clean the place at all before I moved in). Find someone else to rent from unless you have many hundreds of dollars to donate to their cause.
Fantastic experience: When you put in a maintenance request form which is extremely easy to do, it is dealt with promptly. I was kept informed of every step being taken to resolve my maintenance request. It was as if I was of the most important issue they had. I have put in several maintenance request over my time as a tenant of this company. Every single one was dealt with in an extremely timely matter. Best company I've ever rented from. I hope to continue renting from this company for years to come. Thank you and keep up the awesome job.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals has provided timely and effective responses to maintenance issues consistently. It's a relief to know any issues will be handled promptly!
Fantastic experience: My husband and I moved from texas. We were so lucky to find and live in property of Charleston Home Rental. The location is close to everything. Nice view, beautiful house. The Office staffs are so nice and professional. The maintenance staffs are quick and very helpful. We love Charleston Home Rental. I highly recommended to family and friends.
Positive experience: As a property owner I've been using them for 5+ years. Very responsible group that provides comprehensive property management. As an out of state owner, they've been invaluable in dealing with tenant issues and deploying trusted maintenance partners quickly. I would highly recommend them to any property owner.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals satisfactorily resolved any issues we had with them. The original reviews were posted prior to this.
Fantastic experience: Have dealt with this company on the basis of searching for a house, renting a house, moving in, and settling in. Everyone that I have spoken to and worked with has been incredibly nice and incredibly helpful. I have not had a single issue with them and look forward to continuing to work with them.
Fantastic experience: So far, they are better than my old management company. I like the online portal.
Fantastic experience: The apartment had some issues when we moved in. It took four phone calls to get them resolved: One to make them aware of the issues, one to clarify the details, one to schedule a time to come out, and one to let us know they were on the way. Overall, the best experience in renting I've ever had.
Fantastic experience: Had a few issues with the move in process. When the issues were brought to light, Josh, Rob, and Haley worked tooth and nail to get them resolved as quickly as possible.
Negative experience: Absolutely horrible company! So bad that the owner of the house I am renting changed management companies. They refuse to give me my deposit back that I put down as the "move out deposit". Well, I didn't move out. Ben Azar emailed me on 1/23/19 saying he would send me a check. Still have not gotten it. I have emailed him again, Josh Azar and the main email account to no avail. I have also left a voicemail message for accounting and messages for both Ben and Josh Azar. I have not gotten a call back. And that is only the issue I have had since changing management companies. While renting from CHR, they never responded to maintenance requests. Just ignored. I ended up having to locate the owner and going to him directly to have things fixed. Run as fast as you can from renting from this company!
Fantastic experience: I requested to repair the garage door that cannot be remote control. They responded next day and fixed it.
Fantastic experience: Had a rodent issue in our attic and some blown outlets that were fixed and handled rapidly. We have lived here for over 2 years and love it! Charleston Home Rentals is always super fast with Maintenance! Thanks! Whitney Walker
Fantastic experience: I was very impressed with how quickly they responded to fix our shower; it was less than an hour after I reported it that Wes called to say he was on his way. My thanks go out to Josh and Wes; they both are very professional, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with.
Fantastic experience: My experience with Charleston Home Rentals has been exceptional. From the moment I found the house, they have been attentive to my needs, always available to answer questions or help me, and friendly and easy to work with. I highly recommend using Charleston Home Rentals as a renter or home owner.
Fantastic experience: Unfortunately my sink was leaking in the home I was renting. I sent a message to the maintenance department at Charleston Home Rentals and within 24 hours my sink was fixed. It puts your mind at ease to know that they have competent people willing to come so quickly to get the job done.
Fantastic experience: Very quick maintenance service. Completely fixed the small concerns we had with the house within the week before we moved in.
Fantastic experience: Nice people to rent from! I thought I liked the property before I moved in, but to my surprise they painted the place with a fresh beautiful coat of paint before I moved in and made my experience that much better!! Definitely will be with them for a while!
Fantastic experience: I have been really pleased with the service and attention to detail I have received from Charleston Home Rentals for the past several years. Their 24-hour support number makes it easy to call in an issue, and Wes is the best.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals was very prompt and helpful in resolving my issue with a down AC unit. Came out on the weekend to resolve issue. AC unit was non repairable and was replaced as soon as a new unit could be approved by owner and obtained.
Fantastic experience: Great repair service. Our A/C went out for a 2nd time and Wes went out of his way to come to us immediately on his way home. He fixed the issues and explained everything in great detail. Thanks for the quick response, we appreciate you!
Negative experience: This is my first time writing an online review and my experience with CHR was so negative that I couldn’t not write one. Where to begin… 1. On move-in day, we tried to plug our internet modem into the wall and the cable fell right out of the wall. We notified CHR that the cable was not installed and communicated with Matt Azar who assured us the house was wired for internet. Comcast came out to fix it. The technician told us the house was in fact, not wired for internet at all. It was a fake cable they had stuck in the wall. We had to pay to have the house wired for internet. We tried to communicate with CHR about this who refused to pay for it because they continued to claim that the house was wired even after Comcast confirmed it was not. My dealings with Matt Azar have been the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I work in a customer service role myself so I couldn't believe his level of unprofessionalism and down right rude and condescending attitude. I was actually baffled by his emails to me. He would only answer me by email and when I asked to speak on the phone to try to resolve this more easily he refused. I would never hire Matt Azar to work for my company. He should not be in a customer-dealing role. 2. In August our AC went out. We lived on the 2nd floor of the house (heat rises) & the day our AC went out, temperatures in Charleston were upper 90s. We contacted CHR, who never answers the phone, you can only leave voicemails, in the early afternoon. They told us someone would be out that evening to take a look. No one did. The temperature inside our house exceeded 85 degrees, so hot we could not sleep their that night. We called again first thing in the morning and were told they were working on it. We never heard back so we started calling every hour on the hour and each time they would say they were working on it. It was so hot inside our apartment we couldn’t be there. Finally, my roommate drove to CHR office. She went to the door, it was locked. She looked inside the window and saw employees watching TV. They let her in and told her someone would be out soon. At this point, it had been over 24 hours that our AC was broken and they had not sent a maintenance man out. We started researching renter’s laws in SC and found the ‘repair and deduct law’. We called them to tell them we would be deducting rent for the day and half that the AC had gone without being repaired and told them one of our dads was a lawyer (which is true). They immediately sent out a repair man. 3. They do not answer the phone. You have to leave a voicemail. If you ask them to give you a call back about something they will send you an email instead. This is very frustrating. 4. The majority of the time someone emails you about something it comes from a ‘do-not-reply’ email address making it impossible for you to reply directly to the email. This is a big red flag and terrible customer service. 5. Upon move out, our lease states to leave the utilities turned on and CHR will transfer them into their name the day after your lease ends. Our lease ended on July 31 and they did not transfer the water bill into their name until August 9th. When we received our last months water bill it was the minimum monthly bill for July ($42 which we owed) and minimum monthly bill for August ($42 which CHR owed for transferring the bill late). We contacted CHR about this and Ben Azar emailed back to send a copy of the bill and they would pay. After emailing back and forth a few times, I have now emailed Ben 3 times with no response and left 2 voicemails without call backs about CHR paying their part of the bill. Bottom line: CHR is a crooked, shady company who is not customer-service oriented whatsoever. We got to know the woman who owned the house we rented who was very nice. When she found out we did not renew our lease she texted us to ask why. We let her know CHR was not good to work with as renters so I hope she finds someone else to manage her house because the house itself was great.
Fantastic experience: I recently had an electrical maintenance issue resolved quickly and without issue by Roberto. He arrived early for the appointment and was patient and respectful as I got my dog out of the house so he could do the repair. The owner, Teri B, promptly responded to my maintenance request and set up everything right away working with my schedule. She has been responsive and very helpful in the past, as well as Roberto. Thank you!
Negative experience: DO NOT RENT WITH CHARLESTON HOME RENTALS!! They take advantage of students and take your money. We had construction on our house for NINE MONTHS! When you try to contact the company, they will deny your calls and maybe respond 4 months later...maybe. Absolute hell this company is.
Fantastic experience: I've had a great experience with Charleston Home Rentals so far. They have responded promptly to all my concerns.
Fantastic experience: I’m renting a lovely townhome that I moved into a few months ago. Their online portal is easy to use for both communication and payments. Maintenance has been super quick and thorough in taking care of any minor issues I’ve had. It’s been a great experience for me and I’d certainly recommend them.
Negative experience: Important: my original review from 2013 was deleted by them after they responded to it so I'm leaving another one even though it's years later because that is not right! I wish we had never rented from these people when we did several years ago. I'm not just saying this, but they are the most unprofessional and crooked establishment I have ever dealt with and we only rented our townhouse for one year because we could not wait to get away from them back in 2013. There are so many other companies that are worth finding properties through to rent! Even to try and buy your own place if you're ready for that! As difficult as it can be to purchase a home, our buying of a house was less stressful than RENTING FROM THEM!
Negative experience: I have had nothing but problems since day one. I moved into a 1 bed 1 bath in West Ashley and was told it had "fresh paint and new carpet" the place has paint falling off the ceiling, smells musty, and I have found 2 leaks now. The unit is old, outdated, and in poor condition. I'm paying way to much for such a crappy place. Do not use this company. Stay at an apartment complex or rent privately.
Fantastic experience: I will be honest here, I was very concerned about reading all of the reviews on the internet about this company. Found our house through the help of a realtor and 16 months ago (when we signed on our lease), I did have some concerns about communication--seemed like there weren't many humans answering phones vs just an answering service. I also had the cell number of our landlord so I was able to bypass a lot of the communication issues that people were concerned with and used the portal occasionally to discuss a maintenance request here and there, seemed to work well for us. .....BUT what makes me give then 5/5 stars is the way they handled our move out process. I will admit that I am type A and I read through every single word on our lease and did my best to make sure the house was cleaned from top to bottom in an effort to receive our security deposit and our refundable pet deposit back. No one MADE them communicate with us and tell us the things they wanted us to fix after our initial move out inspection but they DID! We were emailed by their maintenance supervisor of a few things that were missed and some additional requests (pick up dog poop, etc) in an effort to refund us our entire deposit. So of course, we came back and did them. They held up their end of the bargain and almost exactly 30 days after our move out inspection received a check for every penny we had given as a deposit. I was worried from all these reviews and honestly don't know if there was staff turnover/policy changes or if the people that gave then 0/5 stars about deposit issues just didn't read their leases but we followed the rules, they communicated with us-and we got out money back. Very happy with this company.
Negative experience: The most dishonest underhanded bunch of people I have ever dealt with! Never answer your calls, lie through their teeth, and will take your money if you don’t fight back. If this was the only company in the world that I would have to deal with I would find a box and live under a bridge. Ok so they say they don't lie..... Janet, Thanks for the very informative e-mail. When our technician was out to all units on Tuesday, he was turned away and asked to leave by one of the other tenants; a neighbor of yours. Despite multiple calls, messages and requests that we perform this service, it seems as if all tenants were not as prepared as you were to receive our technician and he was actively turned away from the entire property. We apologize if this caused you any inconvenience. As a follow up, we have contacted the owner of the property and will reach out to all tenants again. We can provide the necessary filters and directions in person at your convenience. Please just let us now what will work best for you. Thanks, Brendan I have no idea what you are talking about! My shop is Sew Much Better. I am located at 708 South Shelmore Blvd in Mt Pleasant. I was at my shop at 9:30 am! No one came to my door! There is only one apartment above me and the tenants there are very nice. Next to me is Paper Dolls that is also owned by Grace Borland and above them is a tenant that is a wonderful person. Both apartments have their own door with a bell. Paper Dolls does not come in till later in the afternoon so I was the only person there! There were no calls to my phone and no one was knocking on my door. I find this very strange and very hard to believe!!!! Sounds like a cover up to me. If I sound pissed it's because I Am! I don't like being lied to and that is what you are doing to cover your ass! Well Matt, as no surprise to me I am once again impacted not only financially but also personally by your company's incompetence. First you have asked us to reply to your emails as we have. We in return have asked you to respond to questions in our two previous email. You have not! On Tuesday your maintenance company called to inform me at the owners request that your technician would like to come on Wednesday(the next day) at10 am to change the air conditioning filter. They requested my presence so that he could show me how to do it. I cancelled a dentist appointment and made sure I was at my shop by 9:30 am. I waited all day! No Show, No Call! I called this morning and of course I got an answering machine. What a surprise! I left a message. Got a call back about 20 min latter. I did not pick it up because I was working with a student. The women was apologizing for the no show and said the technician got held up with other jobs( blaaaa, blaaaa, blaaaa). Perhaps you might find some time this year to respond!!! Janet Muhs I could post all day the BS they tried to pull. I have it all in my archive's.
Negative experience: 0 stars- Literally the worst management company in all of Charleston. If you decide to rent from them, be ready for 0 returned calls, constant construction, and ignorance.
Fantastic experience: Charleston Home Rentals are fantastic. I recommend them to all of my investor clients. They are professional and their rates are reasonable! They get the job done and they really are very friendly people!
