Short South Realty Group: Reviews
Negative experience: Short south DOES NOT MAINTAIN THEIR PROPERTIES! It took them over a week and a city housing violation to fix our heat in the winter. The basement will likely flood again once rain comes, and they haven’t fixed the roof that was leaking after multiple work orders were placed. On top of all of that, the “new” washer they replaced our other one with was damaged on install and makes horrible shaking noises during the spin cycle. It almost ripped itself off the wall. Instead of fixing the washer they simply screwed it down to the floor.
Negative experience: Do not trust these guys. You can tell that you are just a number to them. You can only contact the property manager by email, so if you have a problem, there is no ability for negotiation. Just look at all the other reviews.
Negative experience: I lived under this company for little less than a year and they allowed me to go with out power for over five days and wouldn’t do anything to fix it. There was also a moment where they charged me rent for a month that I didn’t live there, because their office couldn’t get a lease together after talking to them for three months and they tried to evict me because it wasn’t paid. This company is a scam and won’t fix anything if you need it.
Negative experience: I’ve never seen them inspecting the property they manage near me. They have tenants living there who have junk vehicles in their driveway and are noisy as late as 12:30 in the morning. The whole place looks a bit run down. So they obviously don’t do intensive checks on tenants.
Negative experience: This company is very unprofessional and the owner JOHN CLARK is very rude. It's sad good people can't even conduct business in a professional manner. I don't recommend this company unless you are desperate for a place. It's very unfortunate because the rent is low but the places still need lots of work and the have roaches.
Fantastic experience: I am grateful for Short South Realty Group. They truly make renting our home easy. They work quickly to resolve concerns with our renters. And keep me informed on a monthly basis.
Negative experience: This guy suck John Clark he’s no professional front dest lie we went to see the house we decide that we were gonna take it called front dest right away 9:am because I couldn’t reach him front dest notify me that she will email called her back in an hour she even said he’s working on the lease agreement 6 hours for waiting for him he text me the place is no longer available like what I was there first waiting on the lease agreement they lie and they just waste your time please don’t waste your time here
Negative experience: Very poor Property Management they Denied my Application And never gave me a reason but I’m glad they did seeing that they don’t uphold their end of the lease
Negative experience: Bad bad bad place to rent from. Had issues with my apartment flooding and I had to wait nearly a week until they came to look at it and take care of it. The washing machine has been broken down in the building for a couple of months now. They're a another hook up for two washers and dryers but yet they only have one of each!
Negative experience: My mom rents an apartment from them, her basement flooded and because the main drain is in her unit the plumbing company came out and pulled tons of feminine products and baby wipes out. The company is requesting she pay the full bill even though there’s for other tenants in the building that has 1 plumbing system. When my mom called the company a guy told her “well we’re not going to pay for dna testing and you can ask the other tenants to go half “ very unprofessional and very upsetting how they treated and spoke to my mom. This is only 1 of the many bad stories she told me
Negative experience: AVOID AT ALL COST!!! This place is highly unprofessional. The owner is the worst of them all. This place does not communicate. Planned on renting from this company was approved and everything was only told I need a security deposit. Closer to move in day reached out to see how to move in and get my keys, the owner just notified me that rent is to be paid as well after making all these arrangements to move in. When reached out to inform the company of the miscommunication John Clark the owner was very rude and unprofessional with calling me weird, and that they were going to get there money regardless.
Fantastic experience: Very affordable place to live for a single person
Fantastic experience: Great property manager!! Recommend Short South services 100%
Fantastic experience: I'm very new to renting with them but so far I'm very happy. The application and rental process was easy, the agent Kaley is very nice, and they've been very attentive about any concerns I had...Kaley even called me on a weekend for something that wasn't really urgent. I think we will be very happy renting from them. UPDATE: I have just signed my 3rd lease, so I am at the end of my second year, with Short South. My children and I love living here and renting from Short South. They've been great landlords and I have had no issues with maintenance or anything else. They are attentive when needed and treat their tenants well. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a home to rent. Update 11-11-22 I just signed my fourth lease and I am still extremely happy. I love my house, the rent is reasonable for the area I live in, and they've been great landlords. I haven't had to use maintenance in the last year but anytime I have in the past, they've been just fine. The office staff is great with any questions or issues that you might have. I even made a mistake when I signed my new lease and accidentally made it a month to month and they immediately amended it for me, even though it meant less rent for them. I highly recommend Short South to anyone looking to rent. UPDATE: 10/11/23 Lease #5. I am so happy with this company. They have been great to rent from. Maintenance is great. They are quick to respond to any question or issue. Just very kind people and the rent is very reasonable for the area I am in. I highly recommend Short South! UPDATE 9/18/24: Lease number 6! Love my house, love the management and maintenance, love the community. What more can I say?
Negative experience: Absolutely piss poor service. We will be taking them to court for around $2k due to their refusal to follow landlord tenant laws regarding security deposits.
Fantastic experience: Affordable, friendly and attentive! They will work with you!
Negative experience: Absolutely terrible. Didn’t have hot water or fully draining sinks for a month because maintenance wouldn’t answer, flooring is terrible and coming up and maintenance won’t fix that either because there isn’t “enough evidence”.and for what maintenance DOES “fix” it’s usually just a patch or temporary fix until it breaks enough and they actually fix it. 500 a month for no AC, black mold infested heat, no security, a washer and dryer in the basement that supposed to take coins but doesn’t anymore so you need to you an app, abysmally small sink, incorrectly wired, patchy to the point one of our shelves in the cabinet just gave out. John the slumlord is terrible.
Negative experience: Zero stars would be more accurate. Listen to the negative reviews and do not rent here. We were charged entire security deposit plus an additional 1,000 for "damages" such as baseboard cleaning, tree removal (we weren't responsible for lawn care), pending item removals and other non-existent things. Not to mention the fact that they took all of these photos before we had even moved out of the home and cleaned or fixed anything!!! All of our items are in these photos and there are dishes in the sink then they try to charge us for cleaning it. Tried to talk to John Clark about this all and he is extremely rude and dismissive. All they care about it money, we lived in the house 3 years and took good care of it. You have to expect there will be some wear and tear after that amount of time and frankly the house wasn't nice when we moved in anyways. The house was a good price and in a nice area but I wish I would have saved myself all of the trouble and rented elsewhere. They are literally slumlords. Additionally, we lived at this house for nearly 2 months with no locking front door. An issue that they were made aware of multiple times. It wasn't until they failed the second home inspection that they finally fixed it. Beware.
Negative experience: Beware scammers I got scammed out of 1400$ . Sudently they can't find my money, the people I spoke too disappear. My lease claim are invalid. Stay away from this place. Ps they have roaches on the laundry room.
Fantastic experience: The people of this area are very kind and friendly. We can easily move on. I'm very impressive and the environment is amazing and also the rent is very affordable.
Fantastic experience: Assuming that you're on the lookout for a land organization that esteems your time and keeps you educated each step regarding the way, Short South Realty Gathering is the champion decision. Their obligation to speedy correspondence is absolutely great. From my underlying request, Short South Realty Gathering has been particularly brief and expert. Each email, call, and text was met with quick reactions that never left me pondering the situation with my property search or exchange. Their representatives appear to be truly committed to making the cycle as smooth as could really be expected, continuously giving ideal updates and tending to any worries with great productivity. What separates them isn't simply their speed, however the nature of their correspondence. Every connection is careful, with clear clarifications and important bits of knowledge that assist you with settling on informed choices. It's obvious that they focus on client fulfillment and comprehend the significance of remaining associated all through the land interaction. In an industry where deferrals and absence of correspondence can be a critical wellspring of dissatisfaction, Short South Realty Gathering sparkles brilliantly. Their fast correspondence administration has made my experience both tranquil and charming. On the off chance that you esteem responsive and powerful correspondence in land, I enthusiastically prescribe connecting with them.
Fantastic experience: easy move in process
Fantastic experience: Nice place, Special services for all
Negative experience: LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS! DO NOT RENT FROM THEM! Thank god I didn't get it as bad as most of these reviews. While I lived in one of John Clark's units, his maintenance would come in without permission while I was at work and they would leave lights on, wear their shoes on my carpet, piss in my toilet, and not even tell me why they were in my unit. I moved out and my rhino policy for my security deposit HA HA, so the complex manager says that's the minor things that I had damaged (broken blinds from kids) I asked if I should replace it or if Rhino would cover it, the manager said Rhino covers it. I received a bill for $1,800 in damages. $785 in just paint. They charged me for lines in the carpet from where the dressers were stating the floor needed replacing. Let me tell you I am not a dirty dingy person I like my things neat my house clean and organized, they were trying to get a brand new apartment out of me and force me to pay the insane amount. They charged me $35 for a missing towel rack, there was no towel rack!!! I finally settled the amount cause I refused to pay it! Do not rent with this slum lord it's a headache and nothing but a problem after problem.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful
Negative experience: John Clark (owner) is ridiculously immature. He will refuse to call you, ignore his tenants and be severely unprofessional over email. He doesn’t know anything about his tenants, their leases, or how to handle situations. He will hang up on the phone when he finally returns calls after you start correcting his mistakes and will continue to be unprofessional. I asked him to call me several times because my situation is more complicated than a simple email (I overpaid on my account and they won’t refund me my money) he responds with “I’m on the phone, what’s up?”, that screams unprofessional and that he doesn’t have time for his tenants concerns/questions. I called his office to ask to talk to a person over the phone and she responded “he is very busy and we are short staffed” however that should never fall back on the tenants.
Negative experience: Accepted a fee from us and had us do a self guided tour. Took hours out of my day to go out and see the property only to find that there were already people living inside. Could have been charged with B&E or home invasion. Don’t trust these people with your time or money.
Fantastic experience: Top Notch Service!!!
Hi Ken Clark, we are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience!
Positive experience: Overall not bad. I've not had many issues nor have I had any bad experiences with short south.. they gave me a place to live when no others would. Now going on my third lease renewal.
Thank you for your review! We appreciate your feedback and strive to make our residents experience better every day.
Negative experience: Short South is refusing to fix/replace our A/C, furnace, and water softener.
Negative experience: I would highly recommend that anyone looking to rent an apartment/house/whatever from this realty group think twice and look elsewhere. My experience was extremely poor. This realty group took over my lease about 3 months after I renewed it - I never had an issue with the previous company - and it caused nothing but trouble up until 48 days after my lease officially expired. Right away, issues appeared on the online portal - somehow, someway, my gas and electricity accounts with Consumers Energy and DTE were canceled and instead billed directly to me through Short South - all of this done without my permission or any notice. As a result, Short South billed me directly for both gas/electricity in the portal, except they were incorrect bills that were intended for other units. The cost of these bills was nearly TRIPLE my normal monthly usage. When I tried to contact them about it, nobody had a clue as to what was going on, and I was essentially left on my own to figure out what happened, which was time consuming - all while being threatened with late payment fees on the portal since I was refusing to pay until this got sorted. After my lease expired, it took them 48 days to mail me my security deposit. Despite providing them with my new mailing address, they sent my security deposit to the address of the apartment that I was no longer living in - yes, the one that I just moved out of with them. Pretend that statement is bold and read it again - they sent my security deposit check to the apartment unit that I just moved out of. Naturally, I didn't find this out until about 4 weeks later after I contacted them multiple times, and then they had me run a fool's errand to go back to that address to see if it was still in the mail box and then asked me to run another fool's errand to see if it got stuck up at the local post office. To no one's surprise, the security deposit was not at either. I kept calling, leaving emails, voicemails, etc, but no one got back to me in a timely manner. Eventually, this got solved, and on day 48 I received my security deposit - but only after I began calling every day to ensure they were actually doing their jobs. The only positive experience that I had from this company was with Kokob - she was extremely helpful. She picked up a lot of the slack that the management didn't care to handle. She was the only one throughout my lease that seemed to put a sense of urgency on anything and followed through with any communication. She clearly had to overstep her normal duties in order to get some of this progress rolling. As for the others, I will not name any names, but getting in touch with them was worse than pulling teeth. They do not respond in a timely manner. They are unorganized. They tried to bill me for the wrong utility usage. It took 48 days of my pestering in order for them to send me my security deposit to the correct address.
Negative experience: Signed a lease with this management company only to find out they gave me a place that had a severe roach infestation. Short south realty attempted to force my son and I to live with roaches. They are now trying to hold me accountable for the entire lease term though I pulled out within 24 hours. Will have to go to court about the situation, save yourself the trouble and find a company who’s more honest and humane. Have an exterminator inspect before considering this place because they can’t be trusted to take care of these situations prior to tenant move in. Not to mention my lease signing was essentially a therapy session for my “leasing agent”. Worst experience of my entire life.
Fantastic experience: As the need arrived to need maintenance repairs they showed up quickly and completed the task quickly. Staff has gone above and beyond for me. If an issue arrives they are quick to come to a resolution. Good job Short South Employees!! Diane
Negative experience: If I could give negative stars that would probably be more accurate as this company does not even deserve one. Since the very start this company has been nothing but shady and has consistently lied in order to avoid handling issues they caused. Some of those issues include; ENTERING MY HOME ILLEGALLY WITH NO NOTICE, destroying my property (and then accusing me of lying), allowing homeless people to sleep in the shared basement (even after said person threatened me and I brought this to their attention), the home not meeting the state requirements when it comes to temperature (the downstairs tenants control the heat and when I brought up the fact that it wasn’t meeting requirements they simply said what they could possibly do and then proceeded to do nothing), they allowed those same downstairs tenants to have 2+ extra people (describes as homeless to me) to occupy the residence regardless of the risk to my safety and the fact that it is just illegal. They also sent workers to the home at all hours of the night (as late as 11pm) to do construction on the unit below. Obviously I brought up those concerns to them and their solution at first was to simply dismiss my complaints entirely. When I did not let this go they began to make up family deaths to avoid having to sit down and talk about how these things happened, and when it became clear to me that they were not taking any of my concerns seriously I got legal counsel thinking that they would then have to sit down with my lawyer and I to discuss the lease and how they violated both it and my renters rights. They then ignored my lawyers calls for weeks and decided to just sell the house. They have threatened me with eviction (also illegal) and continue to ignore the fact that their company has not only broken the law (multiple times at this point) but that they have also cause a great deal of emotional stress and suffering. In my communications with John Clark himself he has been nothing but rude and belittling. Constantly throwing the problem off to the property manager Kayley W who herself advised me to seek legal help. It is CRYSTAL CLEAR that this company knows nothing of the properties that they manage and are very comfortable using scare tactics and the silent treatment thinking that the problem will simply go away. My lawyer and I have tried our hardest to work together with them on this and yet John Clark himself stated that he would rather go to court than to sit down and discuss their lack of policy and their now many lease violations. It is sickening to me that people like this exist in this world and I look forward to our day in court when John will have to answer for the actions of his company. This is an ongoing issue as of 7/17/24 and as we sit today John is still not responding or making any effort to resolve the issues his own company caused.
Negative experience: Yeah sure they pay taxes or whatever but barely a functional company.
Negative experience: This is the worse company, if I could give them 0 stars I would, i trusted my property to them and that was my mistake, the level of ir responsibility is huge
Negative experience: Literally the worst company I’ve ever rented from.
Fantastic experience: Graet rental company. Alway have taken good care of my families needs. I hope to be with them as long as I can.
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Fantastic experience: John and his team work very diligently and professionally. As an owner, I am very well informed of everything happening at the property. They have gone above and beyond to help us through every issue. I highly recommend them.
Fantastic experience: John and his team are doing a great job managing my properties!
We appreciate your positive review about your recent experience with us!
Positive experience: Dealing with the people at Short South has been wonderful. Very quick to respond and address any issues we have!
Thanks for the positive review!
Negative experience: I hate it here 20 roe st. This place is infested me and my father moved in here in September of last year. We just recently got charged $45 per maintenance fee for maintenance that didn’t even come to our door that’s $90. We are on section 8 already and we cannot afford for someone to just take our money like that, don’t know why I am planning maintenance fees for in infested apartment, building with roaches and mice. I am currently still a tenant here. When this was first going on, I was already moved into my apartment, when a maintenance man offered me to shower in another apartment building, which I thought was very weird. I am so over this place. Do not move to 20 roe st. Battle Creek MI
Fantastic experience: Excellent experience with Short South Realty Group. And a special shootout to Kaley Weaver who worked quickly and professionally on everything we needed. One of the best experience we’ve ever had with a realty group. And Kaley made the whole experience fantastic!!! Strongly recommend Kaley Weaver and Short South Realty.
Negative experience: If you’re a home owner, don’t even bother doing business with them and if you’re looking to rent, SAVE YOUR MONEY and do NOT rent with short south!!! My family and I moved across country from Arizona in October to Michigan. Since moving into our rental here it has been nothing but problems and we have had maintenance here minimum of eight times since October. This company is not only highly unprofessional, but also they uphold the best possible example of “scumlord”. They basically slapped some paint on an old house and called it a day, essentially robbing my family of over $2k a month. I now have on four separate occasions, had to pull chipping paint out of my babies mouth due to the negligence of this company and them completely dismissing our concerns. The only way anything will get done by them is if you are emailing them and constantly following up (which is exhausting). We have bugs that are INSIDE our microwave and they’ve refused to do anything about that either. Overall, we have yet to have any pleasurable experiences since moving in 5 months ago so please learn from our mistakes and listen to the reviews. This place WILL scam you
Negative experience: If I could rate them a zero I would. Be vary careful renting from these people. They will rip you off. You pay the security deposit when you sign a lease and then they try to charge you again for the security deposit after your first lease expires. They don't explain to you that you will not get the security deposit back.
Negative experience: Things started off pleasant and satisfactory, and maybe someone with a different situation than me and a different property manager would have a better experience. I started to get a little suspicious when they took a while to get back to me to schedule a tour after my application had been processed. I'm going to assume that was the property manager's fault based off the following. Jami was five minutes late to my showing. I realize this is "only five minutes" but I do see this as unprofessional. The property manager should either be a few minutes early or right on time. When she did arrive and I introduced myself to her, she was on the phone with another tenant. She did tell me that tenant calls were being forwarded to their cell phones since their front desk girl was out, but to continue to stay on the phone as we were entering the house and trying to get into the door was rude. She had the incorrect code to get in the door, which she tried a few times and then was visibly agitated, another demonstration of being completely unprofessional in front of a perspective tenant/applicant. She then called maintenance to tell them we couldn't get in and was raising her voice at whoever was on the other end of the phone. After she got off the phone and before we were even in the unit, she looked at me and said "this property probably won't be available by the time you're ready to move". So...why am I here then? Upon entry it was very obvious that the layout of the living room was photoshopped. I'm not talking about the photoshopped furniture (which I understand; you want to make it look realistic); I'm talking about the floor plan itself. Jami knew virtually nothing about the unit. No questions I had were answered with certainty. I asked if there was central air and she told me there was (there was not). Her reasoning was "is there a thermostat? Then yes there must be". It was very apparent she was rushing through the showing and when we were back outside and I was asking her more questions, she would slowly inch herself back to her vehicle. Rude again. She also lives in Lansing and knows very little about Grand Rapids, which she admitted herself. How are you going to employ someone to manage and show properties in the GR area who is barely familiar with the area? Andie was able to connect me with the property owner themselves to discuss possibly extending the 30-day hold deadline on moving in (my current lease doesn't end until the first week of April), which I did appreciate. I connected with her by phone and she told me she would think it over and talk it through with her husband. I was asking for around a 15-day extension that I could compromise with. I imagined this would only take a couple days to "talk over". One week went by and crickets. I sent her a text just following up on day 8 to see if she made a decision and she texted me back the following day telling me they decided they could not honor my request and would try to lease it sooner to someone else. I can't say I blame them for that, but to leave me hanging for over a week and not inform me of that without me reaching out to them first was a bit rude. This is my housing we are talking about, and I would like to not waste time and be informed if I should move on promptly. Before the owner got back to me, I decided to check Short South's website to see if the unit was still available. The unit was gone. I had asked to be contacted if it became unavailable through the waiting process, especially because I said I was interested in moving in so long as the deadline extension could be accommodated, and I was assured I would be. I called the office to see what was going on, and the front desk girl had no idea why it was not being shown anymore. The unit I applied for has not been rented but instead removed from Short South's management entirely and now run by a different group. I asked for my application fee to be reimbursed because of this. They are unwilling to do so and now ignoring me all together.
Negative experience: Yeah, this company is not it. I filled out an application showed my monthly amount on how much section 8 will pay and that I could cover it. I pay way more where I am now and I’ve never had a problem paying the difference. My landlord can attest to that. (My landlord loves me she just wants to sell her house and I can’t afford to buy it right now.) I have great references, no evictions. These people took my money and then denied me saying because I can’t cover the costs and because I have a felony. a felony I went immediately and paid for my background check to see what they were even talking about. I NEVER HAD A FELONY IN MY LIFE!!!! They took my money and ran and gave me no explanation to nothing and didn’t care. I read the reviews and I should’ve listened. Do not mess with this company, they need to be out of business.
Negative experience: I wouldn't touch this place with a 10 foot pole. Multiple bad experiences. The worst one is when I gave John my direct deposit information multiple times ( Drove to his "office") because he lost it along with my tax information. Then he mailed me a check. Zero stars! Avoid at all costs "Edit" *** Originally he wouldn't pay me my last check unless I took this review down
Negative experience: terrible communication. i was unable to pay rent due to not having access to my portal, which i had emailed about SIX times and did not receive an answer. quick to send court notice yet will not assist with portal issue for payment. do NOT recommend this group.
Fantastic experience: John and his group have managed my properties with the right mix of involvement and communication for sux years.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful administrative staff, and maitence is top shelf! Thank you for the smoth and welcoming rental process.
Marquitta Warren, thank you for your kind review; we are happy to pass along your comments to the team here at Short South Management & Development!
Negative experience: Very hard to work with this group. The communication is patchy and unclear. There was a mishap in which mailbox we were suppose to use after the selling of our unit and we were put responsible for figuring it out with the mailers when manager said he would. Still a month later we do not have a mailbox key. Multiple maintenance calls and multiple days for people to show up to complete the request and they didn’t.
Fantastic experience: Short South Realty Group does a great job taking care of my rental property. They professionally and quickly handle all of my billing and maintenance issues. I am always immediately informed of any issues that come up and their owner portal is easy to use. They offer many optional maintenance programs and their pricing is very competitive.
Hi Kathy P, we are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience!
Fantastic experience: My experience with Short South thus far has been excellent. Victor was communicative regarding the rental application process, and was understanding about our unique disposition. Kaley made the hour-plus drive here through bad weather, put in the extra effort to have our agreement finished the same day, and made sure the property was in its advertised condition. I couldn't be happier.
Fantastic experience: The repair person, Kenneth, sent to make repairs in my apartment was considerate and did a very good job at making the necessary repairs. In addition, the head of maintenance stopped by to make sure everyone had heat when the weather turned colder. Good Job! Very happy with the company.
Negative experience: We moved into our apartment 8 years ago when it was owned by a previous company and the carpet was not cleaned prior to move in and multiple closet doors, handles, and kitchen drawers were broken. I submitted multiple maintenance requests that went unfilled over the years and when moving out last month they charged $510 for maintenance fees against my deposit with no explanation as to what we were being charged for so I could not even argue my case. The hot water would also go out every few months for days at a time, once it was out for almost a week. I would not recommend this property management company to anyone.
Fantastic experience: Nice employees that are helpful, they respond quickly, easy dropbox
Positive experience: I rented with Short South for the past year and found Kaley (property manager) to be very helpful! Quick communication and helped resolve any questions or concerns I have had during my time renting!
Negative experience: Makes you pay a $30 fee everytime you make a payment toward your rent so after a year you have paid them and additional 360 to your rent
Fantastic experience: Very responsive and easy to work with
Negative experience: I don't know why these companies accept vouchers from any other faction that claims to help homeless people. They make it seem like you have a chance to get approved because you have assistance from the government when you still need three times the rent of income and a credit score of 650. I had those things I wouldn't need assistance from the government. Thanks for nothing ☺️ enjoy all the fees you got from me.
Negative experience: I highly would NOT recommend renting from this company AT ALL! They charge you for cleaning a carpet that was not cleaned when I moved in and which I complained to Jami Barr about as well as dog poop being on the basement floor when I moved in. They create damages that are not true even with me having a video of the whole entire unit after I moved out and before I moved in.I complained about the doors falling of the hinges in the bedrooms and they were all put in the basement because the company failed to come and fix them and now they are trying to charge me for missing doors. They charge you for light bulbs going out which is ridiculous because I personally replaced light bulbs in the unit myself. The grass was not cut when I moved in and I was fined by the city for that and When I moved out it was cut One week prior to me moving out they added a lawn fee a month later because they took their time viewing the property after I moved out. The neighbors were stealing electricity and they did absolutely nothing about it and John is absolutely HORRIBLE he refused to view the videos I have of the property when I moved out and he kept saying well you have thirty days to dispute any charges you don’t agree with but my account was deleted by the company and I could not access it to review any charges of past due balances. Save yourself the hassle and steer away from This company!
Negative experience: Horrible place to rent from! They are Absolutely horrible with communication, they charge you for every maintenance fee without any communication or heads up, even when you have nothing to do with it not working. They are sneaky and have ridiculous charges. Houses arnt worth what they charge for rent and any issue you have you’ll be charged a big fee for it to be replaced or fixed again even when you didn’t break it. They also have horrible communication amongst each other, one person will tell you something and no one else will be informed or will tell you something completely different.
Fantastic experience: Great agents and responds right away all the team works with your situation
Negative experience: WORST COMPANY EVER TO WORK WITH! Terrible with communication and do not care about tenants at all. Moved into a house trashed that had food and junk all over the whole house. I would never recommend using this company unless you are looking for a terrible experience.
Positive experience: Communication could be improved and hierarchy of management is not clear. When the property owner changed companies, I was informed by email only and wasn't sure if it was legitimate. Since then, I've had communications with one property manager who then mysteriously disappeared only to have another individual's voicemail at the end of his number without any explanation. Maintenance has entered my home without my knowledge and has been inefficient with requests. It seems they could use a very large professional development with the divisions of their multiple employees to better address the company standards they convey. I've had a few solid individual interactions with employees, but there seems to be a disconnect between what is happening within departments and keeping their renters informed.
Fantastic experience: Buena atención
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Fantastic experience: Great company to have as your PM
Kyle Zack, thank you for your kind review; we are happy to pass along your comments to the team here at Short South Management & Development!
Positive experience: I wish this space had been cleaned more deeply before I’d moved in and I think that the heating system is very outdated to a point where it may be somewhat dangerous in the long run. The radiators in this unit look to be over 50 years old and they kick out a lot of dust and turn the back of my toilet black from the emissions. The yard maintenance should be taken care of more regularly aswell. I do like it here a lot though, that all being said
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Positive experience: Easy to get along with.
Thanks for the great review!
Fantastic experience: Short South realty are very kind people I enjoy renting from them they are wonderful when it comes to getting things done appropriately and with the timely manner and there's always somebody to answer the phone if you need something thanks and God bless
Thanks for taking the time to tell us how we're doing.
Negative experience: Rent from them if you like random maintenance fees and eviction notices for said maintenance fee. The property manager will not return phone calls or emails to explain the random maintenance fee. I have reached out over email and phone calls multiple times.
Fantastic experience: Our rental just got bought out by Short South. There was a few extra charges that were added to our account once management switched. They were super fast to respond and understanding! Aww got everything sorted out quicker than I was expecting!
Hi Louis Vieregge, we are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience!
Fantastic experience: Very Professional and exceptional communications Could not ask for more from a Property Manager
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Negative experience: These people don't accept government assistance, which is a form of discrimination. Just not under law yet. But, they are allowed to do as they please without people property. Not tripping, Since then I am now becoming a home owner and don't have to deal with landlords or rental companies. Yah. They also offer no programs, as places should for all kinds of people. But, I guess they'll stay 1 less tenant. But, I'm sure they'll find another idiot as I almost was. Homeowners is the . Good luck to anyone else.
D'Shawn, we do accept vouchers. Best of luck in the future and congrats on becoming a homeowner.
Negative experience: During college and after I had rented several properties from Mr. Roe and always had a great experience. The manager Melissa was easy to talk with and she had compassion for clients. It has all gone downhill since Short reality took over. First and foremost they raise the rent every chance they get while the living space regresses with crumbling walls, electric problems and water pressure issues. My experience with the maintenance crew has been negative as they try to fix problems the cheapest way possible. Some examples my bath tub has been repainted three times now and is still in rough shape. Another example is they had a guy come and repaint the exterior of the house in prep for new resident. I could tell he was half a***** the job and by the time he left the lawn was covered in white paint chips. He evidently didn't know to put a tarp down instead of leaving the chips become other people's problem. I am not sure how they vet new clients but the last two families they accepted were completely irresponsible and disregard responsibility in the lease. It's like they will accept anyone if they can pay or the government pays for them. I have several issues with the property and the manager but I think I have made my point. My suggestion would be to hold a new client orientation meeting to inform new residents of their responsibilities instead of just handing them the lease.
Negative experience: This place is a complete scam and deserves a 0 star review.
Negative experience: This company is a scam, I'd recommend anyone to stay away from this place, they rent for shady landlords and have shady practices themselves. The owner John Clark is just as bad as the shady landlords and will admit on video that they sign documents on behalf of tenants without their consent or knowledge they also provide false documents to their tenants when they are pressed about repairs or court proceedings.
Fantastic experience: Best place I've rented from honestly
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Fantastic experience: John and his team are responsive, professional, and easy to work with. He was an advocate on my behalf in several instances and I would absolutely recommend this firm to others.
Negative experience: Scam, don't trust this place!
Negative experience: Complete scam. I’m constantly being charged for them to fix things that wasn’t fixed then when the were supposed to return my money it mysteriously “bounced” and now I have an unpaid balance in the 100s for no reason & No one answers the phone.
Negative experience: Currently a tenant with them. They took over for ROE rentals and I hated it ever since then! They take their time with coming to fix stuff. They are splitting the water bill down the middle between myself and neighbor. I pay $1500 a month and it’s not even worth it. The place is not update and the list goes on. I can’t wait to move and I will never rent from them again. Definitely wouldn’t recommend
Fantastic experience: Great team!
Fantastic experience: John and his crew do a great job of staying on top of difficult issues and working then through to the benefit of the landlord. In short, he manages other's properties as if they were his own.
Fantastic experience: Very nice and helpful
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Fantastic experience: Had some issues with them b4 but finally got things worked out. Things have gotten better. There one of the few good Realty people I've dealt with. The place I'm living in is the best in the Muskegon area.
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Negative experience: This realty is a scam in itself! They have roach and rat invested homes and they increase rent yearly for homes that should be condemned! They are heartless to the tenants and the infestation of critters is to the point you can’t buy food or cook! The health department needs to be involved and they should be put out of business. Pitiful living conditions! Horrible reality!
Negative experience: John Clark is an incompetent scamming human that doesn’t care about tenants’ issues. Would rather scam people and gaslight them than fix problems in rental properties. Look elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: They are a good company !!! I would definitely recommend them to my friends and family if they need a place to go to Rent
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Fantastic experience: Love renting with them! Realtor Kaylee is so helpful with any quester have. And work orders are done so quickly!!!
Chelsea, Thanks for the great review. Kaley does a great job for us and works hard to ensure all our residents are taken care of!
Negative experience: Slumlords at their worst. Do whatever you can to not rent with these people. They are purposely deceitful in their communications, overcharged us for utilities, and had the balls to try and charge us the next month's rent 3 days before our move out deadline. Almost all of their positive reviews are from property owners as they certainly help their clients at the expense of their tenants. I understand that some people have limited options for housing but it's that same type of person that Short South preys on.
Dennis, sorry to hear you had a poor experience. After review your account all the bills were charged correctly. Also our system sends notices out 3 days before the due date so thats what you were seeing. As a fellow business owner you know how important reviews are which makes this review that much more surprising especially when you had no complaints during the term of your lease. Best of luck moving forward.
Fantastic experience: Great company to lease from. Never had any issues. Maintenance repairs were done quickly. Staff was awesome to work with and very friendly
Tanks for the great review! We are happy to hear you find our staff and services to be quick and friendly.
Fantastic experience: Great
Thank you again for taking the time to let us know how we did. We hope you have a great day!
Negative experience: This place is horrible john clark is rude and dishonest he is just a money hungry person and very selfish he should definitely have his license revoked for selling homes especially treating people like this during a pandemic. Im currently going through a situation with him I contacted a few places who can start an investigation on his company if anyone has any helpful insight or is willing to show up in court or send letters of your experience if anyone wants to help me against this guy we have to join together its power in numbers.
Negative experience: If i could give 0 stars i would! This company has been absolutely awful! We had sagging ceilings, wood rot under windows and water damage within the walls that they refused to fix until we contacted Michigan osha about our issues. All they've done is plastered over and fixed it up to the bare minimum so I would not be surprised if the ceilings collapse at any time. We have also paid for utilities for the whole duplex since it's not included in our rent an we don't have separate meters for the building either! I don't recommend that anyone rents from them, especially from their East Saint Joseph St duplex in Lansing.
Fantastic experience: Very informational
Hi Nikki Oom, we are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience!
Negative experience: Do not trust these people. They are liars. They will send tenants after tenants for $. They lie and have no issues with being liars. They pray on those unable to stand up for themselves. They try and keep deposits for fees they unfairly try to give when you want to leave the property. Never trust!! If you leave a bad review they will send you 7 day day eviction notice. Very untrustworthy.
Positive experience: they are far with ok prices but getting stuff fix is a pain sometimes!
Negative experience: John stop scaming people, have a heart don't think you can't lose it all one day....be humble God is always watching....
